How Swiss Railways brought water refill stations to 3 train station platforms
Swiss Railways (SBB) placed the first Join the Pipe water refill stations on its platforms in Basel, Lausanne and Winterthur, giving travelers and commuters a place to fill a reusable bottle instead of buying a plastic one before boarding.
Why a train operator installs refill stations
Train stations sell a lot of single-use bottled water. Passengers arrive thirsty, have a wait ahead of them, and buy whatever is closest, usually a plastic bottle they will use once. A refill station on the platform changes that default: travelers who already carry a reusable bottle can top it up for free, and the station becomes a visible signal that the operator wants people to stop buying single-use plastic on site. That is the case SBB made with this rollout, and it is the same logic behind refill stations now appearing at conference venues, trade fairs and sports stadiums.
What SBB installed
Records from Join the Pipe's own order system show the SBB rollout covered three stations: a freestanding Street Tap at one location and two Wall Tap units at the others, each finished in brushed stainless steel and carrying the SBB logo. All three are built to the same spec as every outdoor Join the Pipe tap: AISI 316 stainless steel, KIWA and WRAS-approved water-contact parts, and a design rated for freezing winters, which matters on an exposed railway platform in Switzerland. SBB also ordered 370 reusable black bottles, given free with the tap installation and printed in Italian, French and German to match the country's three main language regions.
The placement lesson for other venues
