Public drinking fountain in a German park: how Wörth am Rhein got one of 51 Euro 2024 taps
The first of 51 drinking fountains in the German "one match, one drinking fountain" campaign went into the Wörther Bürgerpark in Wörth am Rhein: a black Join the Pipe Park Tap, installed on a precast foundation with an automatic flush system. The city successfully applied to take part in the campaign during the 2024 European Football Championship in Germany. Its aim was to promote tap water to save plastic waste and CO2.
What the "51 EURO GAMES – 51 EURO TAPS" campaign was
The campaign (officially "EURO 2024 NACHHALTIG: EIN SPIEL – EIN TRINKBRUNNEN") is run by the organisation a tip: tap and funded by the German Federal Environment Ministry (BMUV). Between November 2023 and December 2024 it financed and supported 51 public drinking fountains across Germany. Cities applied for a fountain, and Wörth am Rhein was one of the municipalities selected (source: atiptap.org; original campaign site: euro-trinkbrunnen.de).
The tap Wörth chose: a Park Tap
For the Bürgerpark the city ordered one outdoor Park Tap in black. The order included:
- a precast concrete foundation and mounting set
- a 2 m supply line and a 2 m drainage line
- an automatic flush system with a programmable solenoid valve
- installation either on the foundation or in a separate shaft
The Park Tap is part of JTP's outdoor range of AISI 316 stainless steel taps, with KIWA and WRAS approved water-contact parts. It was built for exactly this use: a public park where anyone can refill a bottle without buying one.
What a municipality should know before ordering a public drinking fountain
- Foundation and connections come first. A tap needs mains supply and a drain. Including a foundation and the supply and drain lines in the order, as Wörth did, avoids a separate groundwork tender.
- Hygiene is automated. An automatic flush system with a programmable valve flushes the line on a set schedule, so water that stood in the pipe overnight or over a quiet week does not reach the next user.
- Choose the model for the location. The Street Tap suits squares and pavements; the Park Tap suits parks and green spaces. Both are listed under outdoor refill stations.
- No minimum order. A single tap is possible. The tap is made to order, and the standard finishes are matte black and matte white.

From one fountain to a football summer, and beyond
The same tap logic works for temporary crowds. For a tournament fan zone, a festival or a trade fair, a mobile solution is the better fit; see water tap rental for events. A permanent public tap like Wörth's keeps working long after the final whistle. A similar permanent public-space example is the refill stations on Swiss railway platforms.
