How Hotel Reichshof Hamburg got 1,000 custom city bottles for its guests

  • by Laurens Boschman

Hotel Reichshof Hamburg ordered about 1,000 custom Hamburg bottles for its guests: black 2-piece bottles with the Hamburg skyline in relief, a black carrier cap and the hotel's logo printed in a single colour. It is a clear example of a city-centre hotel turning a bottle into a branded amenity instead of handing out single-use plastic.

The hotel

The Reichshof opened in 1910 as a traditional Hamburg hotel in the classical patrician style. It was a four-star hotel until it closed at the end of May 2014. After extensive renovations it reopened on 17 July 2015 and continues as an independent hotel.

What Reichshof ordered

Based on the quote that became an order, the hotel took:

  • about 1,000 Hamburg bottles, 2-piece, in black
  • a black carrier cap on every bottle (the loop makes the bottle easy to carry or clip to a bag)
  • a 1-colour print of the Reichshof logo, white on the black bottle
  • delivery to Germany

In the photo you can see the result: two black bottles side by side. The left one is the standard Hamburg design with the city name and skyline in relief. The right one carries the same relief plus the Reichshof logo in a white square. The relief and the logo work together, so the bottle reads as a souvenir of the city and as the hotel's own.

Why hotels choose a branded refillable bottle

  • Material. The bottles are made from 99% sugarcane bioplastic, are BPA-free and have a CO₂-negative lifecycle. They are Braskem "I'm green™" certified and comply with EU regulation EC 10/2011 for food contact.
  • Weight. A 500 ml bottle weighs about 30 g.
  • Durability. The bottle is dishwasher safe up to 65 °C, so it survives repeated use.
  • Visible brand. A guest who takes the bottle home or sightseeing carries the hotel's name through the city.

Printed bottles start at 100 units. Production takes roughly 10 to 12 working days after proof approval, plus delivery. A 1-colour screen print needs a digital proof before production. For every bottle sold, one is donated to a child in Africa.

What a hotel should consider

A bottle only replaces plastic if guests can refill it. Pair the bottles with a refill point in the lobby or on the floors; see our indoor refill stations, and for conferences or events in the hotel, water tap rental for events. A comparable hotel project with a much larger order: The Tides Inn.
